Surfing Divas -- Agnes Waters, Queensland

So you'd think that we'd gotten enough of the beach and ocean on Lady Elliot Island -- but no. After flying back from Lady E (as Daley calls it -- she's quickly fallen into the Aussie habit of giving things nicknames) we drove further north to the sleepy beach town of Agnes Water.

We didn't really know what to expect, so as soon as we arrived we headed down to the beach. Unlike a coral cay -- which really has no beach or swimming -- Agnes Water had a beautiful large soft (no coral) sand beach and small, rolling waves. The kids ran down the beach, stripping off their clothes as they went and dove into the waves. We frollicked in the waves for several hours before we could pry ourselves away. Clint T was especially gleeful -- jumping and riding the waves -- cackling with joy every time he was knocked down.

But the real reason for going to Agnes Water was its reputation as a surfing novice's haven. Daley, Sode and Boo took a class with 25 other surfer-wanna-bes. Unfortunately for Boo, learning to surf is a lot like learning to ski -- much easier for the younger set. Daley and Sode were the youngest people in the class (by at least a decade) and rode more waves than any of the other students (including their Mum). The pictures tell the story. Guess which one is Boo!

After the lesson, Sode asked if she could get a surfboard for Christmas. I reminded her that our part of the Pacific is not nearly as welcoming as it is in AgnesWater (we surfed for 3 plus hours without the slightest chill). So she asked for a wetsuit for her birthday. Hang 10 girl!!

Agnes Water was also where we celebrated a non-traditional Thanksgiving. After a day of surfing we had a roast chicken on the patio of our motel. No turkey or pumpkin pie this year -- but still so much that we are thankful for!

Totally Awesome dudettes! Adele and Clemwent boogey boarding over Thanksgiving but wet suit was required! Maybe this summer your girls would do a refresher and we can all do a Surf Diva class in Santa Cruz?
What an adventure you are having! Today is pancake breakfast at Ohlone and we will toast you with syrup.
Love,
Julie, Clem and Adele

Love the stories. It's great to hear that you're having such a good time.

Tell Sode that I will take her in the water at whatever temperature she can stand!

Best,

ronald

Almost forgot -- while you were learning at Agnes Waters, this is what the surf looked like back home: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/12/03/MNP314G2JU.DTL&hw=mavericks&sn=001&sc=1000
