Australia Zoo and Kondalilla Falls, Queensland

Clint petting a koala!

When we left Ruby, Louie and John, we went to the Australia Zoo about an hour outside of Brisbane. The zoo was the brain child of Steve Irwin -- the famous crocodile hunter who died a few years ago from the barb of a sting ray.

The zoo features native animals (and reptiles) of Australia -- and includes an amazing petting zoo. The kids had a blast petting kangaroos, wallabies and koalas. Seeing echidnas, wombats, Tasmanian devils, and of course, crocodiles. Crikey, those dudes are big.

From there we went to Kondalilla National Park -- a beautiful rainforest park near the quaint town of Monteville. Our goal was a 5KM hike to Kondalilla Falls. As we headed out on our hike the hotel manager, after hearing where we were headed, handed us a handful of salt packets: "These usually work to get the leeches off," he said reassuringly. Mid-way through our hike we were rewarded with a refreshing swim in a pool near the top of the falls. And we only saw one leech.

A more common hazard on the hike were the many, many goannas (giant lizards with sharp claws). Including one rather large one that threatened to halt our walk as it s
at directly on the trail. Frozen with fear on our footpath were a European couple and a an Aussie mother/son pair -- until Boo ran directly toward thhe goanna singing Jingle Bells at the top of her lungs, which caused the poor creature to retreat a few feet, enough to let us all continue on the trail.

Dear Boo, Clints, Daley and Sode,

What amazing experiences. We would so much love to be with you sharing all these adventures, including surfing!

Emilia is missing Daley so much! We are heading off for Huatulco next week. Can't wait to see you when we come back.

Y'all are my inspiration for living a better life!

Remind me to tell you of the receptionist I once worked with who reminded me of a goanna.

And my own stingray story. Not fatal but a friend who I was swimming with said "wow, I've never seen anyone walk on water before" after telling me he spotted a stingray b/t me and the shore.
